The O3 and O3Plus Programmes are advocating for increased investments in Education focused on Health and Well-Being as a key measure to bolster the worldwide efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence.
The international community marks a significant period from November 25 to December 10, 2023, as the "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence". This year, under the banner "Invest in Education to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls", UNESCO, through its O3 and O3 PLUS programmes, leads a powerful campaign to highlight the pivotal role of education in combating this global issue.
Initiated in 2008, the UNiTE campaign, culminating in these 16 days, underscores the severe impact of gender-based violence (GBV) as a widespread human rights violation. Shockingly, one in three women experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, often within their family circles. Particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, GBV stands as a critical societal issue. UNESCO's O3 programmes have been instrumental in addressing these concerns, focusing on empowering adolescents and young people through education for health and well-being.
This year's campaign, "Invest IN EDUCATION to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls", calls stakeholders from the education sector to join forces against GBV. The campagin is stressing the importance of educational investment as a fundamental strategy to prevent violence against women and girls.
