Virtual Debate “Promoting mental health: Building safe and supportive environments”

Regional Debate during the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School: Promoting Mental Health and Building Safe Environments

On November 2, 2023, UNESCO is organizing a regional debate with the theme, "Promoting Mental Health: Building Safe and Supportive Environments," in commemoration of the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School.

This virtual debate will bring together 30 students from six participating countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Uganda, and eSwatini. The primary objective of this initiative is to raise awareness and cultivate a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity within schools across East and Southern Africa.

The link between school violence, bullying (including cyberbullying), and mental health cannot be ignored. Students, educators, and communities can work together to create safer, more nurturing school environments. These debates serve as a call to action, advocating for holistic education that goes beyond academics.

Objectives of the Inter-School Debate:

  1. Raise awareness about the link between school violence, bullying (including cyberbullying), and mental health.

  2. Promote empathy and respect among students, educators, and parents.

  3. Provide practical tools and resources to combat bullying and cyberbullying.

  4. Contribute to the creation of safe and supportive school environments.

As we observe the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, it is important to remember that promoting mental health and building safe and supportive environments is a collective effort. Through these debates, UNESCO aims to empower students and communities to work together towards a brighter, mentally healthier future. Together, we can create schools where every student feels safe, valued, and supported.

2nd of November 2023, 10am to 1pm (SAST) 11am to 2pm (EAT)
